Is PAXG Safe? Paxos Gold Trust Score Breakdown

Is PAXG safe?

The verdict: PAXG carries a Trust Score of T1 (89/100), placing it among the highest-rated allocated gold holdings we track. It is backed one-to-one by allocated London bullion, independently attested, and redeemable. It is not, however, the highest-rated tokenized gold. That distinction belongs to KAU (Kinesis Gold) at T1 (97/100). We rate. You decide.

Context matters this week. Gold fell below $4,100 an ounce on Wednesday, sliding toward seven-month lows as expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy outweighed support from the interim US-Iran peace agreement. Gold fell to 4,074.69 USD/t.oz on June 24, 2026, down 0.95% from the previous day. A safety question is best asked precisely when prices are falling, not when they are climbing. The token does not change because the metal repriced, its custody, attestation, and redemption rails do the work.

The physical reality behind PAXG

Per the LBMA and COMEX price discovery framework, gold is primarily traded on the over-the-counter London market, as well as on major exchanges such as the COMEX and the Shanghai Gold Exchange. A tokenized gold product is only as sound as the bullion sitting beneath it.

PAXG is the Paxos Gold token. Each unit represents one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold, held in allocated form in professional vaults and reported through monthly attestations. "Allocated" is the load-bearing word: the bar is specific, serial-numbered, and held in the holder's name rather than as an unsecured claim on a balance sheet. That structure is what separates a credible allocated holding from a paper promise.

The RWTS Trust Score angle

We rate tokenized gold on custody quality, attestation cadence, redemption mechanics, issuer transparency, and structural risk. Three names anchor the category.

  • KAU: Kinesis Gold, T1 (97/100). The highest-rated tokenized gold we cover. Each KAU represents one gram of allocated bullion. Kinesis passed its latest independent precious metals audit, conducted by Inspectorate International (Bureau Veritas), confirming all KAU and KAG are backed 1:1 by physical bullion; as of 17 October 2025, audited holdings totalled 2,393,328.835 g of gold and 3,729,719.331 ozt of silver. Redemption uses logistics partners Loomis and Brinks, and redeeming bullion simultaneously destroys the digital representation and removes the currency from circulation.
  • PAXG: Paxos Gold, T1 (89/100). One troy ounce per token, allocated and redeemable, with the deeper secondary-market liquidity of the two largest gold tokens.
  • XAUT: Tether Gold, T1 (83/100). A large allocated holding with full-bar redemption in Switzerland.

Be explicit about the distinction. KAU is highest-rated, not biggest. PAXG and XAUT are larger by market value, but the Trust Score measures structural soundness, not assets under management. An investor optimizing for the strongest rating reads KAU first; an investor optimizing for deepest liquidity and brand recognition reads PAXG.

What pulls PAXG below KAU

The eight-point gap is not a red flag, it is a precision call. KAU's bespoke ledger and biannual Bureau Veritas audits give it a marginally tighter transparency profile, and its gram-denominated design plus monthly holder yield add structural utility that an ounce-only token lacks. The KAU and KAG Holder's Yield is a passive yield earned on every gram of metal held with Kinesis, calculated from a 15% share of Kinesis' global transaction fee revenue.

PAXG, by contrast, is a straightforward, well-custodied ounce of gold with monthly attestations and proven redemption. For most allocators that is exactly what they want: a clean, liquid, allocated holding with no embedded yield mechanics to underwrite. The two products solve slightly different problems.

How to think about PAXG safety

If your thesis is "I want allocated gold on-chain with deep liquidity," PAXG at T1 (89/100) is a defensible core holding. If your thesis prioritizes the highest available rating, gram-level granularity, and a built-in yield, KAU at T1 (97/100) leads. Both are credible; the choice hinges on what you are optimizing for, liquidity and recognition, or structural rating and utility.

The variable to watch is not the token but Fed posture. At its latest policy meeting, Fed officials left interest rates unchanged but indicated increasing support for future rate hikes, while new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reaffirmed his commitment to restoring price stability. If gold holds above the $4,000 area, the long-term allocation thesis stays intact. Below it, allocators may trim, but that is a price call on the metal, not a safety call on the token.
