Verdict: A tokenized money market fund is a regulated cash fund whose shares live on-chain, and among the products RWTS tracks, BUIDL leads with a Trust Score of 87/100 (Tier 2), ahead of USYC at 84/100 (Tier 2) and USDY at 77/100 (Tier 2). All three sit in the same tier, so the differences come down to redemption clarity, regulatory posture, and audit depth rather than headline safety. If you want the strongest verified structure available on-chain today, BUIDL is the reference point; if you need a specific access route or jurisdiction, the others are worth a closer look. We rate. What is a tokenized money market fund?

A tokenized money market fund is a conventional money market fund, the kind of low-volatility vehicle that holds cash, US Treasury bills, and repurchase agreements, whose ownership units are issued as tokens on a blockchain. Instead of a fund administrator tracking your shares in a private ledger, the shares exist as transferable tokens in a wallet.

The underlying portfolio does not change: it is still short-dated, high-quality debt managed to preserve principal and pass through yield. What changes is the wrapper. Settlement can happen in minutes, holdings can be composable with other on-chain applications, and the register of owners is visible on a public network. This is the on-chain expression of one of the most boring, and most trusted, products in traditional finance.

For a broader map of where these funds fit, see the tokenized treasuries hub.

How does an on-chain money market fund work?

The mechanics stack in layers:

  1. Fund structure. An asset manager launches a regulated fund with a stated mandate (usually US Treasuries, repo, and cash). A qualified custodian holds the underlying assets.
  2. Tokenization layer. A transfer agent mints tokens representing fund shares. Each token maps to a proportional claim on the fund's net asset value.
  3. Access control. Because these are securities, tokens typically use allowlists so only verified, eligible investors can hold and transfer them.
  4. Yield delivery. Some funds accrue yield by letting the token value rise; others distribute new tokens or cash. Either way, the return traces directly to the underlying money market portfolio.
  5. Subscription and redemption. Investors subscribe and redeem through the issuer's approved channels, often against a stablecoin or via wire, with cutoffs and settlement windows that resemble the traditional fund world.

The transparency benefit is real, but so is the constraint: these are permissioned instruments, not open bearer assets. That distinction is a major input into the redemption and regulation dimensions of the Trust Score.

Tokenized money market fund vs stablecoin

This is the most common point of confusion. Both can be worth roughly one dollar and both sit in a wallet, but they are different instruments:

  • A tokenized money market fund is an investment security. It passes the yield from Treasuries and money market instruments through to token holders, and its value reflects fund NAV.
  • A stablecoin is a payment token designed to hold a fixed peg. The issuer typically keeps the reserve yield, and the token is optimized for transacting, not investing.

If your goal is to earn the risk-free rate on idle cash on-chain, a tokenized money market fund is the closer fit. If your goal is a stable settlement medium, a stablecoin is. For background on the wider category, our explainer on what RWA crypto is frames how tokenized funds sit alongside other real-world asset tokens.

Which tokenized money market fund has the highest Trust Score?

Ranked by RWTS Trust Score, the order is clear:

  • BUIDL: 87/100 (Tier 2). Strongest verified backing and full audit coverage. See BUIDL in the directory.
  • USYC: 84/100 (Tier 2). Very close to BUIDL, trailing mainly on audit depth. See USYC in the directory.
  • USDY: 77/100 (Tier 2). Solid backing and verification, with lower marks on redemption and regulation. See USDY in the directory.

All three land in Tier 2, which means each has verifiable backing and independent scrutiny. The gaps are about process detail, not a structural cliff. For the fuller comparative table across the category, read Best Tokenized Treasuries ranked by Trust Score.

Are tokenized money market funds safe?

A high Trust Score lowers structural and transparency risk, but it does not remove every risk. Key considerations:

  • Market risk. The underlying instruments are short-dated and high-quality, but yields and NAV can still move.
  • Smart-contract risk. The tokenization layer introduces code that can carry bugs or upgrade risk.
  • Access risk. Permissioned allowlists mean you may not be able to hold or move tokens freely, and redemption windows apply.
  • Issuer and custody risk. You depend on the asset manager, transfer agent, and custodian executing correctly.

Final verdict

A tokenized money market fund gives you the familiar profile of an institutional cash fund with on-chain settlement and transparency. By RWTS Trust Score, BUIDL at 87/100 (Tier 2) sets the benchmark, with USYC at 84/100 (Tier 2) close behind and USDY at 77/100 (Tier 2) rounding out the leaders. Pick based on the access route and jurisdiction you need, then verify redemption terms before committing capital.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tokenized money market fund?

A tokenized money market fund is a regulated money market fund whose shares are issued and transferred as blockchain tokens. By RWTS Trust Score, BUIDL leads at 87/100 (Tier 2), followed by USYC at 84/100 (Tier 2) and USDY at 77/100 (Tier 2). The tokens represent claims on short-dated instruments such as US Treasury bills and repo, and they move on-chain while the underlying fund follows traditional custody and regulatory rules.

How does an on-chain money market fund work?

An asset manager runs a conventional money market fund holding cash and short-dated Treasuries, then issues ownership as tokens on a blockchain. Investors subscribe and redeem through an approved transfer agent, holdings are held by a qualified custodian, and yield accrues either through a rising token value or periodic distributions.

Is BUIDL a money market fund?

BUIDL is structured as a tokenized fund holding cash, US Treasury bills and repurchase agreements, which places it in the same category as a money market fund. It scores 87/100 (Tier 2) on the RWTS Trust Score, with full marks on audit (15/15) and strong backing (22/25).

What is the difference between a tokenized money market fund and a stablecoin?

A tokenized money market fund is a regulated fund share that passes through yield from underlying Treasuries and money market instruments to token holders. A stablecoin is a payment token pegged to a currency where issuer reserves usually keep the yield. The fund token is an investment; the stablecoin is a medium of exchange.

Which tokenized money market fund has the highest Trust Score?

Among the funds tracked here, BUIDL has the highest RWTS Trust Score at 87/100 (Tier 2), ahead of USYC at 84/100 (Tier 2) and USDY at 77/100 (Tier 2). Higher scores reflect stronger backing verification, audit coverage, and redemption clarity, not a prediction of returns.

Are tokenized money market funds safe?

No investment is risk-free. A high Trust Score signals verifiable backing, independent audit, and clear redemption, which lowers structural risk, but market, smart-contract, and access-restriction risks remain. RWTS rates transparency and structure. We rate. You decide. Not financial advice.
