Tokenized Gold Explained: KAU, PAXG, XAUT Trust Scores
Verdict first: RWTS rates KAU and PAXG at Tier 1 (90/100), with XAUT at Tier 1 (82/100). KAU and PAXG are the highest-rated tokenized gold products we cover, not the biggest. PAXG and XAUT carry larger market caps. We rate the products. You decide.
Gold spent the first half of October reminding allocators why they hold it. Gold December futures opened at $4,220.80 per troy ounce on Monday, October 12, 2026, up 2.3% from Friday's close. That strength sits on a structural bid: central banks added a net 53 tonnes of gold to reserves in October, the strongest monthly increase since November 2024, with Poland and Brazil leading. The World Gold Council's data frames the demand story. The question for a crypto-native holder is narrower: if you want that metal on-chain, which token actually holds the gold?
This is the core of tokenized gold. A token should be a clean claim on allocated bullion, not a marketing claim. Below, the three leading products on the dimensions that matter (backing, redemption, custody) each with its RWTS Trust Score.
The physical reality behind the token
Every credible tokenized gold product starts in a vault, not a smart contract. Kinesis Gold (KAU) is backed 1:1 by physical investment-grade gold, with each token representing one gram of allocated bullion stored in audited, insured vaults. PAXG and XAUT follow the same logic at a larger unit: one token to one troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold.
The attestation and audit layer is where products separate. Allocated means specific bars assigned to holders, segregated from issuer balance sheets. Biannual or more frequent independent audits, insured storage with Brink's or Swiss vault operators, and a published redemption path are the markers of a product that will survive stress. A token that cannot point to specific, audited ounces is a counterparty IOU wearing a gold label.
Scale and quality are not the same thing. PAXG and XAUT are the larger products by market cap; KAU is smaller but highest-rated alongside PAXG. We say that plainly because the stacker audience deserves the distinction.
KAU, PAXG, XAUT: the Trust Score breakdown
KAU earns a Tier 1 Trust Score of 90/100. Each KAU represents one gram of allocated gold, and Kinesis adds a yield mechanic most competitors lack. Holders receive a monthly yield derived from a 15% share of Kinesis' global transaction fee revenue, paid in KAU to users holding their metals on the platform. Live circulation sits in the low millions of grams; verify the current figure on the Kinesis explorer at explorer.kinesis.money before quoting a number, as it moves with mint and redemption flows.
PAXG also earns a Tier 1 Trust Score of 90/100. It is issued by Paxos, a New York-regulated trust company, with each token backed by one troy ounce of LBMA Good Delivery gold. PAXG's regulatory posture and audit cadence anchor its score, and it is one of the two largest tokenized gold products by market cap.
XAUT earns a Tier 1 Trust Score of 82/100. Issued by Tether, XAUT is large and liquid, with each token tied to one troy ounce of allocated gold. Its lower score reflects a thinner public attestation and disclosure profile relative to KAU and PAXG, not a flaw in the metal itself. The full scoring inputs are documented in our methodology.
Redemption: the test that separates products
Tokenization augments physical ownership; it does not replace it. The redemption path is where that promise is tested. KAU holders can redeem into physical gold through Kinesis when weight minimums are met. PAXG allows redemption into unallocated gold or LBMA bars through Paxos. XAUT redeems through Tether under its own thresholds.
The practical difference is the minimum and the friction. A holder planning to take delivery should read the redemption terms before buying, not after. A token that trades freely but redeems poorly is a trading product, not a store of value, and the Trust Score weights that distinction.
How the levels could play out
Gold's near-term path hinges on variables no one controls: Fed posture, the dollar's direction, and central bank appetite. Expectations for future rate changes remain about the same as last week, so gold prices continue to hang in a range that is more wait-and-see than strongly trending. If the central bank bid holds and the dollar softens, the structural case stays intact. If real yields climb, the metal faces a headwind. Neither outcome changes which token best holds the ounce, it only changes the ounce's price.
