Ondo Finance Review: OUSG and USDY Trust Scores Explained

Verdict: Ondo finance runs two of the most watched products in tokenized Treasuries, and on the RWTS Trust Score both land in the same place: OUSG scores 77/100 (Tier 2) and USDY scores 77/100 (Tier 2). That is a solid, credible showing driven by strong Treasury backing and consistent attestation, held back from the top tier mainly by redemption friction and eligibility gating. Neither is a stablecoin in the pure sense; both are yield-bearing instruments with real assets behind them. We rate. You decide.

If you are researching ondo finance because you want exposure to short-term US Treasury yield inside a token, this page explains what the firm builds, how OUSG and USDY differ, what backs them, and exactly why the Trust Score sits where it does.

The Trust Score, dimension by dimension

The RWTS Trust Score breaks every rated asset into six weighted dimensions: backing quality, verifiability, redemption, audit, regulatory posture, and track record. Below is OUSG (77/100, Tier 2) shown dimension by dimension.

The pattern is what you would expect from a well-run tokenized Treasury product. Backing (22) and verifiability (16) are strong because the underlying is short-dated US government paper with regular reporting. Audit (12) and regulatory posture (11) are healthy. The two dimensions that keep OUSG out of the top tier are redemption (9) and track record (7): access is gated to eligible holders and the operating history, while good, is shorter than the oldest money market products. USDY carries the identical 77/100 (Tier 2) profile.

What is Ondo Finance?

Ondo Finance is a company that tokenizes access to traditional fixed-income exposure, primarily short-term US Treasuries, and packages it into on-chain tokens. Rather than inventing new risk, the model wraps familiar, low-volatility government-backed assets so they can settle and transfer on public blockchains. If the broader category is new to you, our explainer on what RWA crypto actually is is the best starting point.

Ondo's two flagship tokens serve different jobs:

  • OUSG is a tokenized short-term US Treasury fund. It behaves like a fund share and generally targets qualified and institutional holders.
  • USDY is a yield-bearing dollar token. It is designed to move more like a transferable dollar substitute for non-US persons while still passing through Treasury yield.

Both sit inside the tokenized Treasuries hub on RWTS, the fastest-growing corner of tokenized real-world assets.

How OUSG works

OUSG holds exposure to short-term US Treasury instruments, and the token value reflects the accruing yield of that underlying portfolio. It is structured for holders who can meet eligibility requirements, which is why it reads more like an institutional fund wrapper than a retail stablecoin. The strong backing (22) and audit (12) scores reflect the quality and reporting of that underlying paper. The redemption dimension (9) is where the gating shows up: exiting is orderly but not frictionless or universally open.

How USDY works

USDY is Ondo's yield-bearing dollar. It is backed by a portfolio of short-term US Treasuries plus bank demand deposits, and yield accrues to the holder either through a rising token value or a rebasing balance depending on the version held. USDY is offered to non-US persons and entities after onboarding. Its 77/100 (Tier 2) score mirrors OUSG because the underlying economics and controls are closely aligned.

Is Ondo Finance OUSG safe?

OUSG scores 77/100 (Tier 2), which places it firmly in credible, well-collateralized territory without claiming the very top tier. The main risks are not credit risk on the underlying Treasuries, which is minimal, but rather the practical constraints of a tokenized instrument: redemption is eligibility-gated, smart contract and custody layers add operational surface area, and the track record (7) is shorter than legacy money market funds. "Safe" is relative to what you compare it against. For context on how a top-tier tokenized Treasury product scores, read our breakdown of whether BUIDL is safe.

OUSG vs USDY: which is right for you

Because both score 77/100 (Tier 2), the choice is about structure and access rather than trust level:

  • Choose OUSG if you are a qualified or institutional holder who wants a fund-style Treasury token.
  • Choose USDY if you are a non-US person or entity who wants a transferable, yield-bearing dollar token.

How Ondo compares to the wider field

Ondo's products sit alongside the largest tokenized Treasury vehicles, including BlackRock's BUIDL, which anchors a much larger institutional push detailed in our note on BlackRock's $150B digital assets move. The category as a whole is sensitive to short-term rates, so the yield on OUSG and USDY tracks Treasury policy closely. To see how our six dimensions are weighted and why a strong product can still stop at Tier 2, read the full RWTS methodology.

The verdict on Ondo Finance

Ondo Finance offers two credible, well-backed ways to hold tokenized US Treasury yield: OUSG at 77/100 (Tier 2) and USDY at 77/100 (Tier 2). Both earn their scores through strong backing and consistent attestation, and both are limited from the top tier by redemption gating and a shorter track record rather than by any weakness in the underlying assets. Match the product to your eligibility and your use case, confirm current terms with the issuer, and size accordingly.
